South Korea's local ICT industry has to balance the development of its information and communications (ICT) technology industry, and for it to do so, it must stop relying heavily on imported equipment, according to Business Korea.

The government is said to have seldom utilised ICT equipment manufactured locally—including servers, storage devices and network equipment—in its software R&D projects.

Server and storage development has almost been single-minded about using foreign hardware, with very little Korean-made equipment being used for network software, the publication quoted an industry analyst.

The Telecommunications Technology Association added that it has never used domestically-produced servers or storages in testing the performance of newly-designed software, which is also the case for most of the other research institutes.

The reliance on foreign hardware stems from software developers having to consider the actual environments of use, in which imported hardware such as those of HP, Dell, IBM and EMC are prevalent.

Experts warn that the practice of using imported equipment can hurt the ICT industry badly in the long run. The government must then encourage and lead local hardware-based software development and assist small firms in accumulating technologies.
