Toshiba to spend $1B to expand in Southeast Asia

Friday, December 5, 2014

A billion-dollar opportunity rises in Southeast Asia as Tokyo-based electronics manufacturer Toshiba Corp. bolsters its presence in the region with a $1 billion investment budget, Bangkok Post reported.

Toshiba is set to utilise the said budget in Southeast Asia for the next five years, hoping that regional sales would double during the targeted period.

According to vice president Fumio Otani, the company's centre of business operations will remain in Thailand, which has been home to Toshiba for more than four decades. He, however, failed to disclose more details on the investment.

Speaking at a press conference in Bangkok, Otani reaffirmed Thailand's pivotal role in Toshiba Group's Asean business strategy. The company also remains positive about the country even after Toshiba Semiconductor Thailand's (TST) old factory was inundated during the 2001 floods.

Instead of packing and leaving, the company opted to transfer to a much bigger location in Prachin Buri last year.

Toshiba also expects to gain from opportunities arising in Thailand, particularly in energy as the country aims to reduce imports of fuel as well as lessen dependence on natural gas for power generation. The company is known for power-generation technologies such as hydro, thermal and photovoltaic.

In addition, Otani said that Thailand targets the development of efficient transport systems and smart urban planning, where Toshiba can offer solutions.
