Small geometry and high demand fuels flash memory growth

Monday, December 8, 2014

Output value for the global NAND flash memory industry will rise 12% to US$27.6 billion in 2015, thanks to shrinking manufacturing costs on the supply side and growing demand for embedded MMC (eMMC) and solid-state drives (SSD), according to DRAMeXchange.

Migrating to newer 15/16nm manufacturing processes will enable chip suppliers further reduce their production costs in 2015, said DRAMeXchange. Meanwhile, a roll-out of new end-market products employing eMMC and SSD solutions during the second half of the year will stimulate demand for the memory.

Global NAND flash bit demand is anticipated to rise 42.8% on year to about 38.38 billion 2Gb-equivalent units in 2015, according to DRAMeXchange.

DRAMeXchange noted that the growing smartphone market will buoy the global NAND flash output value in 2015. The average capacity of eMMC devices used in smartphones will expand by approximately 18%.

With the adoption of SSDs for notebooks increasing, SSDs are identified as another important driver of NAND flash demand in 2015, DRAMeXchange added.
