Chevrolet gave details of its 2016 Volt one week after it was revealed at CES 2015, The Verge reported. Compared to its predecessor, the new Volt model has both lighter and larger electric battery, improving its capacity from 17.1kWh to 18.4kWh.
What makes the 2016 model stand out is its range as it can reach 50 miles with just electric power, 12 miles better than last year's model. The company also believes that the hybrid car can travel an average of more than 1,000 miles before filling its gas tank anew.
The second-generation Volt also boasts of a revised battery tech, resulting in a 21lbs lighter electric propulsion system. Its two-motor drive unit is also lighter by 100lbs than the 2015 unit. With lighter weight and more efficient engine, the hybrid car's two engines provide better speed. In addition, Chevrolet claims that the 2016 Volt has 19 per cent stronger zero-to-30mph acceleration.
The Volt's shape is inspired by an athlete's toned figure, according to the company. The Verge said in its report that the car "still looks like a five-door sedan" but that it does possess "nice aesthetic touches, including a battery charge indicator projected onto the windscreen and an illuminated charging socket," which allows drivers to plug in their cars in the dark.
