Samsung looks to Europe to supply some components

Monday, February 2, 2015

Samsung Electronics is looking for European companies that will provide it with technology for cameras, sensors, materials and coatings, and use cases for wearables.

An event was held recently under the auspices of the Silicon Saxony organisation to bring Samsung purchasing and central R&D executives face-to-face with European technology companies and discuss opportunities for supply deals and cooperation.

Three separate parts of Samsung were represented, covering the functions of purchasing, development and advanced R&D, at a three-day meeting in Dresden at which they laid out a shopping list of topics of interest to the Korean giant. The Samsung Innovation Days were held January 19 to 21 and involved Samsung's International Procurement Centre (IPC), Digital Media and Communications R&D Centre (DMC) and the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT).

Samsung said that it was looking for technology to fit into Samsung products in the areas of consumer electronics, IT and mobile communications. Some of these could be ready for market and others still in development.

The different parts of Samsung attending the event have different time-scales of interest. IPC is interested in technologies ready in one to two years. DMC's horizon is three to five years while SAIT is looking out over three to 10 years.
