SK Hynix sets their eye on NAND Flash

Tuesday, March 24, 2015

SK hynix said Friday that it will strengthen its NAND flash memory segment this year.

"We will remain competitive as the leader in the DRAM sector by mass producing the lower 20-nanometer-class products and will reinforce capabilities in the NAND flash memory segment by boosting technological caliber in the triple-level cell and three-dimensional sectors," SK hynix CEO Park Sung-wook said during the 67th shareholders' general meeting at its headquarters in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province, Friday.

He said the mass production of the 20-nanometer-class DRAM products will begin in the latter half of this year.

"Last year, SK hynix prepared for the future growth to strengthen competitiveness in the NAND business, which is expected to see high growth rate," Park said.

"We have pushed ahead with acquisitions and technological partnership, proceeded construction of new M14 factory in Icheon and installed a local subsidiary in Chongqing, China, as foundations for our future memory chip business.

The CEO stressed the M14 production line, which is scheduled to be completed in the first half of this year, will play a key role in enhancing manufacturing capability. He also said the company will secure the next-generation memory chip technology to overcome the current technological limitation.

In the chip manufacturing industry, lower nanometer figures mean higher productivity.
In 2014, SK hynix posted record-breaking 17 trillion won sales and 5.1 trillion won operating profit.

During the meeting, the cash dividend for a common stock was set at 300 won.
Park was chosen again as the executive director and the reelection proposal for four outside directors was also passed.

The CEO pointed out that the memory chip market now faces greater difficulties in process conversion and mass production due to technological complexities. At the same time, customers demand a stable supply of products with higher quality.

"Our primary competitive as a memory chipmaker has become very important," he said. "We will not be big-headed for what we have achieved and will continue to stay alert against external crisis and to boost our core capabilities."
