Taiwan-based Powerchip Technology is developing a single-chip solution integrating embedded flash memory and ARM-based processors, targeting Internet of Things (IoT), according to industry sources.
Dubbed iRAM, the solution also integrates a connectivity chip combining Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and Wi-Fi, said the sources. Powerchip will start shipping its iRAM solutions in the second half of 2015.
Powerchip has previously transitioned itself into a foundry services provider. The company was once Taiwan's largest DRAM chipmaker in terms of production capacity.
Powerchip is reportedly contracted by fabless memory supplier including Elite Semiconductor Memory Technology (ESMT), Etron Technology and Zentel Electronics to manufacture their niche memory products. Powerchip also produces standard DRAM chips for module vendor Kingston Technology.
Powerchip is an IDM foundry rather than a pure-play foundry, the sources observed. Powerchip has been shipping NAND flash chips for use in multi-chip package (MCP) memory modules, while offering customized solutions involving its design capability for companies in the LCD driver IC, power management chip, CMOS image sensor, NFC chip and car-use memory fields, the sources said.
