Google will set up its biggest campus outside the United States in Hyderabad, according to a report from The Economic Times.
An excited Telengana IT minister KT Rama Rao announced over Twitter that the global tech giant will invest Rs 1,000 crore in the 7.2-acre campus, which will generate some 6,500 jobs. Google's global head (facilities and workplaces) David Radcliffe and KTR signed a memorandum of understanding at Google's headquarters in Mountain View on Tuesday.
Currently, Google has four offices in India at Hyderabad, Bangalore, Gurgaon and Mumbai. All of them are leased. The new Hyderabad campus will be fully owned by the U.S. tech company, and it expects the facility to start operation in 2019. It will cover a space of approximately 2 million square feet.
According to Radcliffe, Google will spend about 12 months on planning, while construction will begin in the summer of 2016, which will take about 2 1/2 years to complete.
KTR and the Google Street View team also met, allowing Hyderabad to be fully covered by 'Street View,' a technology featured in Google Maps and Google Earth that offers a 360-degree panoramic view of an area. In the long run, Street View will also cover other Telangana cities and towns.
The IT minister also requested to use Street View for monitoring deviations from approved building plans, mapping of industrial land banks situated in different parts of the state and property tax collection among others, which Google had agreed to support.
In addition, KTR also took the opportunity to meet with senior officials of the Google Education team to talk about how technology can help improve the state's educational standards. He made an appeal to the tech giant to back the Digital Telangana programme. Specifically, KTR urged Google to support the component of the programme that aims to promote digital literacy among school kids.
