Google Glass technology to get an overhaul

Friday, May 22, 2015

The chief of Google's shelved Glass project says his division is focused on finding "the way forward" for the eyewear technology.

Tony Fadell, speaking at Google's Zeitgeist conference in the U.K., added that the company would "have no sacred cows" in an overhaul.

Google shut down its Glass Explorer program — which allowed a limited number of people to buy the eyewear for $1,500 — early this year.

The device, which placed a small screen above the wearers' right eye, drew privacy concerns and consumer scorn after a much-hyped debut.

Google executives, however, cautioned that the wearable tech was not dead, and that Fadell — who founded and still heads the Nest connected device firm purchased by Google in 2014 — took over in order to develop the technology for broad public availability.

“I have a really engaged team, they’re really excited about the future and expect more things to come soon,” Fadell said.
