Silicon Motion SSD controller supports Micron TLC Nand

Monday, July 13, 2015

Silicon Motion's SM2256 SATA client SSD controller now supports Micron's new 16nm 128Gb TLC NAND flash and uses the company's proprietary NANDXtend error-correcting code (ECC) technology as well as data protection.

The SM2256 can deliver up to 540MB/s sequential read performance and 460MB/s sequential write, Silicon Motion said, as well as up to 90,000 random read IOPS and 80,000 random write IOPS. Other features of the company's controller for Micron's TLC NAND include support for the latest security protocols: the SM2256 is AES 256, Trusted Computing Group (TCG) and Opal full-drive encryption compliant. Silicon Motion said the controller is well suited for client SSDs targeting ultrabooks, laptops, tablets and HDD replacement. Silicon Motion announced the controller last year, anticipating a rise in TLC NAND use in consumer applications.

Micron's new high capacity 16nm TLC NAND said enables the same capacity as MLC NAND with a 28% savings in the die area, the company said, and is aimed at applications where performance and reliability are important, but cost per GB is critical, such as consumer SSDs and USB drives.

Micron's 16GB TLC NAND is in production and available now, and the company anticipates releasing its own TLC-based client SSD in the fall. nvSRAM suited for medical devices, automation systemsFabless semiconductor firm Anvo-Systems Dresden announced a serial non-volatile SRAM (nvSRAM) with 1Mb storage capacity, the ANV32AA1W, with a silicon–oxide–nitride–oxide–silicon (SONOS) flash storage element included with each memory cell.

The SONOS technology enables non-volatile storage of all data in less than 15 milliseconds in case of an unforeseeable operating voltage drop below a defined value, the company said, while also providing the typical advantages of a standard SRAM, such as fast access times and unlimited read/write endurance. The ANV32AA1W is suitable for applications such as medical devices, industrial automation, measurement technology, building automation and smart metering systems.
