South Korean chipmakers took up more than 80 percent of the global market for mobile dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips in the second quarter, data showed Tuesday, far outpacing their rivals.

Samsung Electronics Co. accounted for 57.6 percent of the global mobile DRAM market in the April-June period, up 5.5 percentage points from a quarter earlier, the data compiled by industry tracker TrendForce showed.

Samsung's smaller domestic rival SK hynix Inc. held 23.9 percent of the market, also up 1 percentage point from the January-March period, it added.

Accordingly, South Korea stood as the top country in the mobile DRAM industry, dominating with a combined market share of 81.5 percent. Micron Group of the United States came in second with 16.5 percent.

Taiwan-based Nanya Technology Corp. and Winbond Electronics Corp. took up 1.2 percent and 0.7 percent, respectively, over the cited period, the data also showed.

"By equipping its flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S6 and the S6 Edge, with 3GB LPDDR4, Samsung significantly raised shipments of its own mobile DRAM to about 40 percent of its total DRAM shipments during the same period," the industry tracker said.

The LPDDR4, based on the 20-nanometer technology, is a mobile DRAM that can handle data at a twice as fast rate than the preceding LPDDR3.

"Samsung currently has the highest LPDDR4 production ratio and is manufacturing with the most advanced process, the 20 nanometer. It therefore has maintained a high profitability and is expected to supply most LPDDR4 for the next iPhone," it added.

U.S. tech giant Apple Inc. is set to showcase the iPhone 6S and the iPhone 6S Plus next month.

The global mobile DRAM market came to US$3.85 billion in the April-June period, up 7.7 percent on-quarter, TrendForce added.
