Nvidia, the world's leading graphic chip maker, has introduced a less-expensive model of its latest 900 series GeForce graphic processing unit (GPU), targeting a wider range of customers.
Justin Walker, Nvidia's GeForce GTX product manager, said Thursday the GeForce GTX950, which is $159, will be an affordable option for gamers who have used an outdated GPU.
"The GTX950 has been developed based on Nvidia's most advanced Maxwell architecture and guarantees high power efficiency and best performance for gamers," Walker said at a press conference in Seoul. "Besides such hardware specifications, it also supports up-to-date graphic technologies such as DirectX 12, making it a perfect GPU to run the latest video games on desktop computers."
The Maxwell architecture was unveiled in April last year and Nvidia has rolled out the 900 series GeForce GPUs ranging from the high-end GTX Titan X to the GTX950.
Compared with the GTX650, which has been one of Nvidia's most popular GPU products, the GTX950 has three times higher graphic processing capability and twice the energy efficiency, Walker said.
"When it was launched in 2012, the GTX650 had been designed to best support the latest video games at that time," he said. "But now its capability falls short to do the same for the newest games. The GTX950 perfectly supports fast frame rates and image qualities when users run the latest games like ‘Grand Theft Auto 5' and ‘Witcher 3.'"
Walker also said the GTX950 provides faster graphic responsiveness for multiplayer online strategy games such as "League of Legends", "Defense of the Ancients 2" and "Heroes of the Storm."
"Users can optimize refresh rate, frame rate, latency and image quality for such games with a single click," he said.
Nvidia also introduced major updates scheduled for the GeForce Experience, software that optimizes a computer system's graphic settings for games and video performance.
Users can record their game play in video clips and upload them to YouTube. They also can stream the game play through the Twitch service to share it.
Walker said GeForce Experience users can connect one-on-one to stream the game play without latency or invite a friend to the game play to delegate control of it.
