Foundry chipmaker TSMC has been actively pursuing 16nm FinFET chip orders in order to gain a majority of market share in the FinFET segment starting 2016, according to market sources.
While securing a portion of Apple's A9 chip orders, TSMC with its 16nm FinFET node has also obtained orders from AMD, Avago, Broadcom, HiSilicon Technologies, LG Electronics, MediaTek, Nvidia and Xilinx. The foundry is looking to aggressively ramp up its market share in the FinFET segment, the sources indicated.
However, TSMC failed to maintain orders for Qualcomm's flagship mobile chips. Qualcomm has placed orders for its next-generation Snapdragon 820 series with Samsung Electronics, which will use its 14nm FinFET process to manufacture the chips, the sources said.
Nevertheless, TSMC with its growing customer base is on pace to lead the FinFET segment in 2016 and beyond, the sources believe.
TSMC disclosed previously it had entered volume production of chips made using its 16nm FinFET process in July, and is on track to move the node to mass production starting the fourth quarter.
As for 10nm FinFET, TSMC plans to move the node to risk production around the end of 2016, about one year following the mass production of its 16nm FinFET process, according to the company.
