Samsung Electronics Co. unveiled five new solid state drives (SSD) lineups on Tuesday that come with improved speed and power efficiency, with one of them featuring the third-generation V-NAND.
The South Korean giant showcased a 2.5-inch model in its 950 EVO lineup that comes with the third-generation V-NAND technology in three sizes -- 1 terabyte, 500 gigabytes and 250 gigabytes.
The development is significant because the new generation boasts 48 layers of cells, compared to the 32 layers in the second generation, thus allowing SSDs to boast improved performances.
A solid state drive is a data storage device made with a NAND flash memory chip that saves data without power present and is more durable and faster than a hard disk drive.
"Through the launch of the third-generation V-NAND SSD, we have provided optimized solutions to consumers and businesses that boasts the industry's fastest speed and excellent power-saving features," Samsung said, adding that the firm has paved the way to open a full-fledged commercialization of terabyte-level SSDs.
Previous 850 EVO models came with the second-generation V-NAND. Samsung said it plans to add more terabyte-level products in the lineup and tap deeper into the premium market.
Samsung also introduced four other SSDs that are based on the second-generation V-NAND.
The new products are expected to be released in 50 countries, including South Korea, China and the United States later this month.
