Microsoft Corp. is laying off about 1,000 employees, or about 1% of its workforce, a person familiar with the situation said.
The cuts are in addition to earlier moves to shed about 7,800 jobs in connection with plans to scale back the former Nokia Corp. handset business. Microsoft took roughly $8.4 billion in write-downs and other charges related to that business in its fourth fiscal quarter.
"The job reductions were spread across more than one business area and country and reflect adaptations to business needs," a Microsoft spokesman said in a prepared statement. "We go through this process in the most thoughtful manner possible, with the deepest respect for affected individuals."
The cuts were reported earlier by the New York Times.
