Sales of semiconductors fell 2.8% to $85.2 billion in the third quarter from a year earlier although sales rose 1.5% from the second quarter, according to data from the Semiconductor Industry Association Monday.
The group blamed the drop in sales to weak demand and currency fluctuations.
By region, sales rose 5% year-on-year in China while slumping 10.6% in Europe and dropping 3.9% in the Americas. The PHLX Semiconductor Index SOX, +0.10% composed of companies involved in the design, distribution, manufacture, and sale of chips, rose 0.9% to 668.53 on Monday. The index rallied 9.9% in October following four months of declines.
