The Taiwan government has offered subsidies to consumers for purchasing power-saving home appliances and smartphones and will continue until February 29, 2016. The promotion has successfully boosted demand for related products.
In order to push consumers to upgrade from a 2G services to 4G, the government will provide a NT$2,000 (US$60.74) subsidy on smartphone purchases or a NT$200 subsidy on the monthly service fee for the first three months. Some telecom carriers are even adding more discounts to attract demand.
Some telecom channel players pointed out that the promotions helped increase entry-level smartphone sales for vendors such as HTC and Asustek Computer in Taiwan in November and reduced the number of 2G service subscribers to 1.1 million, down from 1.3 million previously.
Asustek and HTC both accounted for around 15% of Taiwan's 750,000-800,000 smartphone sales in November.
For home appliances, the government is also issuing up to NT$2,000 in subsidies to consumers, helping related brand vendors to see over 50% growth on year in sales, the sources noted.
