Self cleaning bathroom on passenger jets

Friday, March 11, 2016

In an effort to provide a more luxurious, less contagious flying experience, Boeing engineers are testing a new method of bathroom cleaning. The self-sanitizing prototype bathroom uses ultraviolet lights, touchless faucets, soap dispensers and more. The far UV rays are capable of killing 99.9 percent of pathogens, but aren’t harmful to humans, unlike UVA and UVB rays.

When the bathroom is empty, the cleaning system automatically flips the UV lights on and lifts the toilet seat. The entire process takes less than three seconds. Possibly the best news for passengers with bathroom-adjacent seats is that the far UV light also knocks out odors.
