Microsoft recently announced the acquisition of an Italian tech company along with plans to integrate its Internet of Things capabilities into the tech giant’s IoT offerings.

Solair, Microsoft said, already utilized Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform to develop solutions through Internet-connected devices for clients in the manufacturing, retail, food and transportation sectors.

The tech giant particularly pointed to Solair's work with fellow Italian company Rancilio Group, which allowed Rancilio to remotely monitor espresso machines and bolster efficiency, cost savings and revenue.

Microsoft added that numerous Japanese manufacturers monitor their production lines — and thereby increase their capacity and energy efficiency — with the help of Solair systems.

"Solair shares our ambition for helping customers harness their untapped data and create new intelligence with IoT, and this acquisition supports our strategy to deliver the most complete IoT offering for enterprises," Sam George, partner director of Azure IoT, wrote in a blog post announcing the transaction.

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Solair officials, meanwhile, lauded the forthcoming "new chapter" in the firm's five-year history and predicted that the deal would "bring the power of IoT to new and unique customer scenarios."

"I’m confident that Solair’s technology and talent will be able to make an important contribution to Microsoft’s Azure IoT Suite and Microsoft’s broader IoT ambitions," wrote Solair CEO Tom Davis.
