Intel's 200 series chipset to support DDR4-2400

Friday, May 27, 2016

Intel is reportedly readying to release its next generation 200 series chipset at Computex 2016. The current Skylake based CPUs, including the flagship Core i7-6700K, run on the Z170 chipset.

The new Broadwell-E family of processors is just around the corner. The flagship CPU in the series, the Core i7-6950X, is quite the beast featuring 10 cores and 20 threads. The processor supports DDR4-2400 RAM and will be released on the exciting X99 chipset based motherboards.

In addition to this, Intel is also set to refresh their mainstream Skylake lineup with Kaby Lake in Q4 this year. Kaby Lake will also see a chipset refresh with the new 200 series, and according to the latest rumor, this chipset could launch next week at Computex.

The new 200 series chipset will maintain the same LGA 1151 socket and be compatible with Skylake. This means users of existing Skylake system can upgrade their motherboard first and then jump on Kaby Lake later.

Further, the 200 series chipset will feature increased I/O performance, as well as include 6 x SATA 6Gbps ports, and 10 x USB 3.0 ports.
