COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2016, Asia's largest information and communication technology exhibition, opens today at the Taipei World Trade Center with the organizer's stated goal of "building partnerships in internet computing ecosystems."
In the event that runs through June 2, up to 5,009 booths are used to showcase 1,602 exhibitors from 30 countries ¡ª the highest number of visiting countries in five years. This year the show will feature four major themes: the Internet of Things (IoT), innovations and startups, business solutions and gaming.
Up to 15,541 international buyers have registered for the event online as of May 28. The roster includes more than 200 system integrators, global venture capitalists and crowdfunding operators, said event organizer Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA).
Among the key exhibitors are ABB, Acer, ASUS, Audi, HTC, Intel, Mercedes-Benz, Microsoft, MSI, Samsung and Siemens.
"With COMPUTEX's fully updated exhibition layout, its industry insights and more diversified events and activities, the show aims to facilitate the development of the entire technology sector," said Walter Yeh (È~Ã÷Ë®), executive vice president of TAITRA, who estimated that the show will draw 120,000 visitors this year.
Chang Li (ˆóÒ), deputy secretary-general of the Taipei Computer Association, another sponsor of the event, said there is a clear surge in the number of foreign registrations, and he expressed optimism in the business-matching opportunities that COMPUTEX will create this year. Last year roughly US$25 billion worth of transactions was conducted at COMPUTEX.
The ICT industry in Taiwan has been a key player for a long time in OEM and ODM industries, and the country will remain pivotal in the era of IoT, if it can implement business model changes, said Vito Di Bari, a world renowned futurist who attended yesterday's COMPUTEX press conference.
For the first time COMPUTEX has opened up the innovation focused InnoVEX designated area to showcase 217 startups hailing from 22 countries. There will be pitch contests, demos and business matchmaking to get the creative juices flowing. With potential partnership and venture capital opportunities, "COMPUTEX is the best platform for startup companies," Yeh said.
Another new exhibit called SmarTEX will highlight IoT technology. The venue will feature 180 exhibitors demonstrating smart applications in the fields of security, manufacturing, home and entertainment, automotive electronics and 3D printing, among others.
In the domain of business solutions, global big names will sit side-by-side with domestic companies at COMPUTEX not only to compete, but also to exchange knowledge, Yeh said.
