Samsung to open Philipines fab for DDR4 DRAM process

Tuesday, June 7, 2016

PHOENIX SEMICONDUCTOR Philippines Corp. (PSPC) on Monday said it started producing next-generation memory chips for South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics Ltd. at its facility in Clark Freeport, Pampanga.

In a statement, PSPC said it has completed the installation of new DDR4 (double data rate fourth-generation) technology-compliant manufacturing lines at the Clark facility.

“We are pleased by the fresh vote of confidence by Samsung on the company which deepens our relationship with them and puts our production processes at par with the most advanced in the world,” PSPC President Byeongchun Lee was quoted as saying in the statement.

Last May, PSPC renewed its supply deal with Samsung to mass produce dynamic random access modules (DRAM) using proprietary interface and die stacking technology and the new 10 nanometer process. The DDR4 supports data transfer rate of 3,200 megabits per second and is 30% faster than the previous technology.

Under the three-year deal, Samsung will continue to supply production materials along with semiconductor manufacturing and testing equipment to ensure PSPC conforms to the tech giant’s standards.

Mr. Lee said Samsung’s equipment, worth an estimated $4.13 million, allowed the ramp up of assembly and packaging of Samsung-branded next-generation DRAM dual inline memory modules and flip chips.

PSPC has also started producing secured-digital flash memory cards based on Samsung’s 3D vertical NAND flash memory technology.

The listed company said the new equipment is designed to manufacture 38 million DRAMs per month, 73% higher than the old machines.

A wholly-owned subsidiary of South Korea’s STS Semiconductor and Telecommunications Co., PSPC is one of the Philippines’ top semiconductor product manufacturers and exporters. In the first three months of 2016, the company shipped out $325 million worth of semiconductors.
