Avnet has rebranded its Avnet Memec – Silica semiconductor distribution business to Avnet Silica.
With it goes one of the most famous names of UK distribution, Memec.
“Our brand is the bond that connects us to our customers,” said Mario Orlandi, president of Avnet Silica. “By moving to the Avnet Silica brand, we feel that it better reflects our position in the market.”
Dick Skipworth founded Memec in the 1970s and drove it to become the third largest distributor in the world.
Skipworth devised a novel formula for a distributor: Once a group had more than half a dozen product lines, the Memec business model recognised that it had reached the limit of its capability to satisfactorily handle the lines, and a new group would be set up.
Skipworth finally sold the company to Veba of Germany.
Avnet acquired UK-based specialist chip distributor Memec in 2005, creating the Avnet-Memec business a year later.
