Chip shipments for VR (virtual reality) devices are expected to surge during the year-end shopping season in Europe and the US, according to industry sources.
The already-available Oculus Rift and HTC's Vive have received positive feedback with shipments kicking off in the second quarter of 2016, the sources indicated. The VR device market is set to heat up in the fourth quarter of 2016 with more new products from Google (Cardboard), Samsung (Gear VR) and Sony (PlayStation VR), the sources said.
Sales of VR devices will likely peak during the year-end shopping season in Europe and the US, the sources noted. The overall chip shipments for VR devices will rise dramatically in the second half of 2016 compared to the first half of the year, the sources said.
Meanwhile, China-based players intend to promote entry-level devices with their low-pricing strategy, the sources observed. Companies such as LeTV and Xiaomi have rolled out affordable VR products to further stimulate the overall market demand, the sources said.
In addition, Apple is expected to launch its VR/AR products by 2017 which will further expand the market scale, the sources believe.
