The pre-orders status of Samsung’s flagship smartphone Galaxy Note 7 seems to be going very well. At present, their monthly shipments are expected to see a nearly twofold increase from the previous generation Note 5, which would make it the most popular model in Samsung’s Note range.
Rumor has it that Samsung will sell up to 3 million Note 7 units in the third quarter of 2016. This is significantly higher than Samsung’s other bestseller Note 5, which saw shipments of only 1.6 million units during the same period last year. Judging from the successful pre-order of Galaxy Note 7, it’s estimated that the total shipments of the model will reach up to 18 million units by the end of 2016, reported Chosun Biz and the Korea Herald.
The increased shipments of Note 7 will prompt Samsung to search for new suppliers in order to ensure stable supply. Currently, the iris recognition module is entirely supplied by Korean camera module maker Patron. However, Samsung is reportedly in discussion with another ten suppliers for risk diversification, in case the production of its iris recognition component encounters issues.
The Galaxy Note 7 is currently scheduled to go on sale on August 19. Despite the handsets’ initial availability in South Korea, U.S. and China, their release is expected to be postponed in other major countries such as the Netherlands and Malaysia, due to their higher than expected demands. The delay is a sign that the total pre-order numbers for Galaxy Note 7 is well beyond Samsung’s initial forecast, reported Japan’s Blog of Mobile on August 12.
According to recent reports from CNBC and Mail Business News, the three leading South Korean telecommunications providers have already kicked off the pre-orders for the Galaxy Note 7 on August 6. Industry insiders reveal that the pre-order numbers have hit 200,000 units within the first two days, which is two times higher than the company’s S7/S7 Edge sales. The high demand for the Galaxy Note 7 is mainly attributed to the phablet’s iris recognition feature, curved screen, improved S pen, and other innovative functions. Meanwhile, telecommunication service providers have also offered various bonuses to attract consumers. Some are reportedly offering the Gear Fit 2 smartwatch to increase preorders, while other have provided a 50% discount for future screen maintenance expenses.
The Galaxy Note 7 is the first model among Samsung’s smartphone series to adopt the “USB Type-C” format, reported Nikkei. Meanwhile, the smartphone also incorporates Corning’s latest “Gorilla Glass 5” for its screen. Aside from the finger print identification feature, the Galaxy Note 7 is also equipped with iris recognition. It’s also the first model that adopts dual curved screen and dust/ water proof model among Samsung’s Note series.
