Samsung Electronics Co. (ŽO¯) of South Korea took the top spot in smartphone sales volume in Taiwan in July due to the warm reception of its mid-range Galxay J series, according to industry sources.

In July, about 619,000 smartphones were sold in Taiwan, up 1.9 percent from a month earlier, and the growth reversed a 5.3 percent month-on-month decline in June, the sources said.

Samsung made up 25 percent of the total smartphone sales volume in Taiwan last month, ahead of PC brand Asustek Computer Inc. (‰Ø×) with 15.8 percent, Taiwan-based vendor HTC Corp. (G’B“d) with 15 percent, Apple Inc. of the United States with 14.2 percent, and Japan's Sony Corp. with 8.9 percent, the sources added.

The sources said that Samsung and Sony witnessed their market share in July rising from 24.5 percent and 7.7 percent seen a month earlier, respectively. Meanwhile, Asustek and Apple suffered a decline from 16.2 percent and 15.7 percent, seen in June, respectively.

HTC's market share stayed little changed in July, the sources said.

In terms of sales value, the sources said that although Apple was in a transition period before the launch of the next generation iPhone models, its high-priced iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 6S Plus helped the brand continue to have the highest sales value in Taiwan in July.

Last month, Apple accounted for 36.8 percent of the total smartphone sales value in Taiwan, but its market share fell from 41.2 percent recorded in June, the sources said.

Samsung came in second with 23.2 percent ahead of HTC with 11.9 percent, Sonly with 11.4 percent, and Asustek with 7.4 percent, the sources added.

As for sale of individual models, the 2016 edition of Samsung's Galaxy J7 was the top selling model in Taiwan last month followed by the iPhone 6s 64G, the Phone 6s Plus 64G, the Galaxy J7, the Galaxy S7 Edge, Taiwan Mobile's Amazing X3, HTC's Desire 530, the Galaxy J5, Asustek's ZenFone Go TV, and China's OPPO F1, the sources said.

Among the top 10 individual models, Samsung took four spots after the South Korean firm marked down its smartphones to boost buying interest in July, the sources said.

The Amazing X3 entered into the top 10 rankings in July after Taiwan Mobile (‘äàs‘å), one of the leading telecom operators in the country, launched a preferential subscription program to lure consumers who wanted to replace their old models with a new one, the sources said.
