MediaTek reportedly has landed tablet chip orders from Amazon for production of its second generation smart home device, the Echo Dot. Shipments of the chips will peak in October-November, according to a Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) report.
Since 2014, Amazon has been buying chips from MediaTek for the production of its tablets and OTT boxes, and now the two companies are expanding their cooperation to include the smart home devices, said the paper.
Amazon will continue to purchase chips from Texas Instruments for its first generation Echo, the paper noted.
Shipments of the Echo devices are expected to reach three million units in 2016 and expand to 10 million units in 2017, the paper estimated.
