MediaTek reportedly intends to invest in electric car company NextEV with an aim to expand its business in the car electronics sector.
In response, MediaTek said that the company regards car vendors as potential customers, but has not made any decision to make an equity investment in any of them. MediaTek added the company continues efforts to explore business opportunities in the in-vehicle networking and car electronics markets.
Earlier in November 2016, MediaTek disclosed plans to acquire 35-49% of China-based Mapbar Technology for up to US$100 million. The planned investment will allow the Taiwan-based firm to indirectly control Beijing Mapbar Technology, which provides map location services in China.
Earlier in 2016, MediaTek announced a partnership with China-based NavInfo, a digital mapping service provider. MediaTek also agreed to sell subsidiary AutoChips to NavInfo for a total of US$600 million, and invest a total of US$100 million in its alliance with NavInfo. The deal is still being reviewed by relevant authorities in China.
