Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently confirmed on Twitter that the company plans to start its roll out of the Enhanced Autopilot system in before the end of the year, Engadget reports.
Musk tweeted that the company should begin sending the update to vehicles soon.
This news shows how Tesla remains on track to meet Musk’s lofty goals and that full autonomy may not be that far away.
Tesla owners will have to wait until an over-the-air (OTA) update is complete before they use Enhanced Autopilot. When Musk announced the upgraded autonomous driving system, he said the company would roll it out through OTA updates released throughout 2017, which means that it could be some time before all Tesla owners can take full advantage of the features of Enhanced Autopilot.
If it starts to roll out Enhanced Autopilot by the end of the year, Tesla should remain on track to meet its ambitious future goals. This past summer in a blog post, Musk pointed to Tesla’s future plans for an autonomous ride-sharing service. Later in the year, the company announced that all of its new vehicles would include the hardware for full autonomy, which sets the stage for such a service to be rolled out later in 2017 or in 2018. Rolling out the Enhanced Autopilot is a crucial first step in these future plans. But moving into 2017 the rollout will be worth monitoring to make sure it goes smoothly and doesn't disrupt Tesla’s ambitious future plans.
