SK Hynix might just be behind Samsung in the DRAM market for smartphones, but this latest announcement could actually land in clients that are willing to pay top dollar to incorporate faster RAM in their mobile devices. In addition to announcing an 8GB RAM module for mid-tier devices, SK Hynix claims that it has announced the world’s first highest density of 8GB RAM for smartphones of the future.

8GB RAM Is the Highest Density in the LPDDR4X Standard From SK Hynix and Will Boast Much Better Efficiency Compared to LPDDR4 DRAM Chips

The manufacturer claims that in the LPDRR4X realm, its 8GB DRAM chip for smartphones and tablets is unparalleled when it comes to performance and efficiency. According to the company, this chip will boast up to 20 percent greater efficiency compared to the LPDDR4 standard thanks to running at an ultra-low voltage of just 0.6V. In contrast, LPDD4 RAM in smartphones runs in at 1.1V.

Senior Vice President Jonghoon Oh, who is also the Head of DRAM Product Development Division says the following regarding the latest announcement:

“SK Hynix would help mobile device users maximize their experiences. “The Company plans to expand the usage of the product to various applications such as high end laptops and automotive electronics as well as mobile gadgets.”

Coming to the speed metrics of the latest DRAM module, a single 8GB LPDDR4X RAM module can process 34.1GB of data per second. It also sports smaller dimensions of 12mm x 12.7mm and with a thickness of less than 1mm, it also means that phone manufacturers will have greater flexibility in reducing their products’ overall thickness or even do something better such as incorporate a larger battery.

With so many advantages coming from this chip, it is possible that it will be found in the upcoming Galaxy S8. However, you should be reminded that not too long ago, Samsung announced its own 8GB LPPDR4 RAM module for future devices. At this point, we are unsure whether or not Samsung will choose to place the faster RAM or use its own chip processed on its home turf, but looking at how speed will matter greatly when the S8 is getting announced, we are strongly inclined to say that the flagship might feature the faster memory.
