Rubidium oscillator offers extreme low phase noise

Wednesday, January 18, 2017

IQD’s rubidium oscillator, the IQRB-2, delivers low phase noise of -112dBc/Hz at 1Hz and -158dBc/Hz at 10kHz.

It is housed in a 95.5 x 62.5 x 44.3mm module so can be used in a 1U rack. The electrical connections include an SMA connector for RF output, RS232 connectors RX & TX, a voltage control input and a frequency locked monitor.

With a short term stability 100 times better than a typical Oven Controlled Crystal Oscillator (OCXO) at 0.02ppb/s at 100s, this model is suitable for frequency calibration, Long Term Evolution (LTE) base stations, high speed wireless communications and surveillance applications.

Based around an atomic clock, the IQRB-2 delivers an accuracy of ±0.3ppb irrespective of temperature fluctuations from -20 to 65°C and operates at a standard frequency of 10MHz with a Sinewave 50Ù output.

The ageing is ±0.05ppb per month and the IQRB-2 has a voltage control option to give a controllable frequency tuning of ±2ppb max.

The module is specified with a supply voltage of 12V, although the product will operate over a voltage range of 12V to 18V, with a power consumption of 6W when stabilised and a warm up time of typically 5 minutes.

The device can be operated over a temperature range of -20 to +65 degrees C and MTBF is approximately 100,000 hours.
