Xiaomi is reportedly working on its chipset in a bid to differentiate itself better from other Chinese OEMs in the smartphone market. Dubbed “Pinecone”, Xiaomi aims to release the first phone featuring the chipset within a month.
By developing its own chipset, Xiaomi would be better able to optimise its software for the hardware at hand. It would also allow the company to better integrate the various features from the chipset into its devices to offer more features.
Xiaomi has a very strong relationship with Qualcomm, and the former has been the first OEM to bring Qualcomm’s chipsets to the market through its devices. It will be interesting to see how Xiaomi’s custom chipset performs in comparison to offerings from Qualcomm and whether the company uses it in its budget handsets or flagship ones.
So far, Huawei is the only OEM to make use of its own in-house chipsets for its devices. This has allowed the company to avoid supply chain disruptions and avoid fiery hot Snapdragon chipsets from Qualcomm like the Snapdragon 810 and Snapdragon 615.
Despite its rapid growth in India, Xiaomi has been struggling in China — its home market. The company recently fell out of the top five smartphone OEMs in China, with Oppo, Vivo, Samsung, and Huawei dominating the charts.
