Exynos 9 is 10 core with 10nm FinFET processs

Friday, February 24, 2017

Samsung Electronics Co., the world's top memory chip and smartphone maker, said Thursday it will begin the mass production of the industry's first mobile application processor (AP) built on 10-nanometer FinFET technology.

Samsung said it plans to apply the new FinFET technology to Exynos 9 which is widely predicted by analysts to be installed in the tech company's next flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S8, scheduled to be released as early as next month.

"The industry's first mass production of 10nm FinFET technology demonstrates our leadership in advanced process technology,” said Jong Shik-yoon, vice president at Samsung Electronics. "We will continue our efforts to innovate scaling technologies and provide differentiated total solutions to our customers."

The new FinFET process adopts an advanced 3D transistor structure with additional enhancements in both process technology and design compared to its 14-nanometer predecessor, the company said.

The 10-nanometer AP is 40 percent more energy-efficient with performance up by 27 percent compared with the preceding 14-nanometer process, it said.

Cutting-edge technology such as "heterogeneous system architecture" was used in the 10-nanometer model, allowing it to be applied to artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning machines, the company said.

"This product shows Samsung's best technology level," said Heo Kook, a Samsung executive, adding that the technology will act as a foundation for various future technologies including the next-generation smartphones, tablets, VR and AR.
