Bloomberg reports that TSMC director of corporate communications Elizabeth Sun has said that the US is among several sites which TSMC is considering for its 3nm fab.
“We have not ruled out going to the U.S., but the formal decision will not be made until early next year so there’s still quite a few months to go,” Sun said, “it’s too early to jump the gun to say where we will be landed at.”
TSMC will make the decision in H1 2018, said Sun.
21 years ago, TSMC started building its first US fab – an 8” fab – at Camas in Washington State.
Altera took a 23% in the company which owned the fab – Wafertech – but sold its stake to TSMC for $350 million in 2000.
President Trump’s statements that the US may increase taxes and tariffs on companies which off-shore their manufacturing and assembly operations before selling the finished product in the US, may have helped get the USA on TSMC’s list of possible sites, while Apple’s Taiwan assembler Foxconn, which assembles products mainly in mainland China, has said it is considering establishing a US assembly plant.
