Korean chip prices hit 30 month height

Tuesday, July 18, 2017

Export prices of South Korean semiconductors hit a 30-month high in June, data showed Monday, in the latest sign of growing demand for chips.

The export price index of semiconductors came to 48.79 last month, the highest since December 2014, when it stood at 49.05, according to data compiled by the Bank of Korea (BOK).

The hike came amid improved exports of the information and technology industry.

Exports of the mainstay dynamic random-access memory chip (DRAM) product rose 0.6 percent in June from a month earlier. DRAM chips are widely used in computers.

The BOK data also showed that exports of flash memory chips -- mainly used in smartphones and other mobile devices -- edged up 1.9 percent during the same period.

The BOK said in a recent report that rising demand for South Korean chips could give a boost to the country's exports.

South Korea's tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. has estimated it achieved record-high earnings for the April-June period at 14 trillion won (US$12 billion), compared with 8.14 trillion won a year earlier.
