Global NAND market to hit oversupply by 2019

Friday, January 5, 2018

The global NAND flash market may face an oversupply in 2019, an industry tracker said Friday, as major industry players are announcing plans to bolster their production capacities.

Industry tracker DRAMeXchange said the outlook comes as companies, including Samsung Electronics, Toshiba and Intel, have been announcing plans to expand their production capacities.

"Amid the trend of production capacity expansion in the NAND flash industry from 2018 to 2020, most manufacturers have taken steps to plan for expansion," DRAMeXchange said.

"Samsung will also expand its NAND flash factory in Xian, increasing their production of 3D NAND flash in China. SK hynix is investing in a new factory, M15, in Cheongju, which also plans to produce 3D NAND flash with 96-layer or greater," the researcher added.

Xian is located in central China, and Cheongju lies about 120 kilometers south of Seoul.

NAND flash memory products are widely used in smartphones and laptops. Unlike mobile dynamic random access memory (DRAM), flash memory can preserve data even when it has no power supply.
