Samsung to expand NAND fab in China

Thursday, March 15, 2018

Samsung Electronics Co. plans to expand its NAND flash memory chip line located in Xian, China, industry sources said Tuesday, to meet the rising global demand for its products.

The South Korean tech giant plans to start the construction to expand the facilities later this month, with Kim Ki-nam, the head of Samsung's crucial chip business, participating in the groundbreaking ceremony with Chinese provincial officials.

Samsung plans to invest US$7 billion over the next three years for the expansion project, the sources said.

The company also approved a preliminary investment plan to set up a second chip-production line in Pyeongtaek last month. Pyeongtaek, a city located 70 kilometers south of Seoul, is already home to one of Samsung's chip-production lines. The plant began churning out chips in July 2017.
