Samsung is now the largest patent holder in the United States, boasting a portfolio of 75,596 valid patents in the country as of January 1. According to global patent journal IAM, the milestone can largely be attributed to Samsung’s high level of involvement in many technical areas where it actively seeks to acquire patent rights. IBM held the title of the largest U.S. patent holder for 25 consecutive years until 2018, as per the same source.

The electronics giant’s patented inventions registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office range from smartphone technologies to unmanned aerial systems. For instance, some of the recent patents awarded to the tech giant by the USPTO include a concept smartphone or tablet device with an expandable form factor meant to allow users to expand the display’s real estate by physically pulling the device’s side edges outward. The design includes an unconcealed panel and two additional displays on both of its sides which fold inside its body to create a standard “chocolate bar” form factor. However, the two side panels concealed within the device would expand outward to offer thrice the display’s area size if the side edges are pulled out compared to when they are retracted. More recently, Samsung was also awarded a patent for a unique drone equipped with a screen and featuring voice recognition systems, though the purpose of that invention is still unclear. The display panel itself isn’t attached to the body of the drone directly. Instead, the screen is held in place by two hinges and is capable of tilting itself up. The drone concept also features motion detection sensors capable of tracking an individual’s movements and adjusting the angle of the screen so that it is always visible to the user, Samsung explained in its application.

Samsung is expected to post its consolidated financials for the first quarter of 2018 later this month, with some recent estimates suggesting the firm will post a massive year-on-year improvement in terms of profits, partially thanks to the rising DRAM prices and its newly released Galaxy S9 series.
