China IT conglomerate Tsinghua Unigroup has kicked off a spate of investment projects designed to step up the development of its cloud business and turn itself into the country's strongest public cloud service provider, according to group chairman Zhao Weiguo.
Zhao said his group has just signed a strategic cooperation pact with the Tianjin government to build a CNY12 billion (US$1.88 billion) base in the northern Chinese city as its national headquarters for cloud business. The headquarters, to be located in the Tianjin Binhai Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone, will house 2,000 top-notch engineers to help turn Tianjin into a smart, digital city.
He said both sides will move to carry out deep cooperation in many fields including smart city development, industrial Internets, security information going cloud, and industry development funds.
The group recently also broke ground for the construction of a CNY600 million chip and cloud center in the Chengdu Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone, northwestern China, with the center slated for official run in June 2020.
Zhao said that the center will serve as a new-generation IT R&D platform, with all the high-tech enterprises under Tsinghua Unirgroup as well as prestigious enterprises maintaining partnerships with the group's existing two core business segments, chips and cloud networks, to have high-end engineers station there.
So far, all the major subsidiaries under the group, including H3C Technology, Unigroup Spreadtrum RDA, and Unigroup Guoxin Microelectronics, have set up operations in Chengdu, now one of the most important ICT bases in China, according to Zhao.
Among other related efforts, Tsinghua Unigroup has also inked a strategic cooperation accord with the Liangyungang city government in Jiangsu province to jointly set up a large-size datacenter and smart city. Both sides will cooperate in such fields as smart city, IoT, cloud computing, big data, and digital transformation, and will help industries and enterprises in the city upgrade their operations and management.
