The Dallas area is playing a part in a massive wireless deal Nokia (NYSE: NOK) unveiled with T-Mobile (Nasdaq: TMUS).
The companies announced Monday a $3.5 billion agreement to accelerate the deployment of the next-generation of wireless called 5G. Nokia is set to provide T-Mobile with 5G technology, software and services, they said in a release.
In Nokia’s Irving facility, the company has been conducting integration testing between key network elements with the technology, it said in an emailed statement. The team will be doing 5G device compatibility and interoperability testing as well.
Nokia, which employs more than 2,000 people locally in the Dallas area, will help build out a nationwide network for T-Mobile, the companies said in the release.
"Nokia and T-Mobile will advance the large-scale deployment of 5G services throughout the United States," said Ashish Chowdhary, chief customer operations officer for Nokia. "This is a testament to our companies' strong and productive working relationship, one which has produced several important technological milestones in recent months, and which now allows us to make 5G a commercial reality."
The new technology is set to shake up the industry with blazing-fast speeds that can enable everything from better experiences on smartphones to the promise of driverless cars.
Technologies like 5G are among the draws for potential employees at Nokia, according to Terry Stallcup, head of talent acquisition for the Americas.
“We offer some of the latest and greatest technology experiences,” she said in a separate interview earlier this month. “That’s been really key for us with us being on the leading edge of 5G.”
There are other signs of growth at Nokia in the Dallas area. The company recently signed a lease for 350,000 square feet of space at Cypress Waters, a massive development that includes office, retail and residential space, according to the city of Dallas and Billingsley, the developer behind the project. It aims to wrap up consolidation of local sites in the early third quarter of 2019.
