Qualcomm is set to build an operational and manufacturing engineering center in Taiwan by the end of 2019, according to a local report, citing Hong Tsai-lung, commissioner of Taiwan's Fair Trade Commission (FTC).
The operational and manufacturing engineering center will be Qualcomm's first "genuine" investment in Taiwan, as Qualcomm is currently focusing on licensing business, OEM and collaborative projects with Taiwan's companies, Hong was cited as explaining in the Economic Daily News report.
The investment is part of a set of mutually agreed settlement reached between the US chipmaker and the FTC over Qualcomm's alleged antitrust practice.
Under the agreement, Qualcomm said it will drive certain commercial initiatives in Taiwan over the next five years for the benefit of the mobile and semiconductor ecosystem, SMEs and consumers, including 5G collaborations, new market expansion, start-up and university collaborations and the development of a Taiwanese center for operations and manufacturing engineering.
The manufacturing engineering center also aims to connect the entire supply chain in the Asia-Pacific region for the benefits of the global economy, and therefore it will help lift up Taiwan's position in the global industry chain, Hong added.
However, Hong said he is not in a position to reveal the location of the planned center on behalf of Qualcomm.
