EDA giant Cadence Design to expand into Nanjing, China

Friday, August 17, 2018

EDA vendor Cadence Design Systems is scheduled to start operating a new subsidiary in Nanjing, China in September, according to industry sources.

Cadence will have its new subsidiary in Nanjing dedicated to providing IP services locally, said the sources, adding that the unit does not rule out attracting new funds from other companies.

Fellow EDA company Synopsys and Beijing-headquartered EDA firm Huada Empyrean Software also have plans to set up operations locally in Nanjing, the sources indicated.

Nanjing is where Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) operates a 12-inch wafer fab and a design service center. Lithography tool vendor ASML has already been encouraged to open a branch office in Nanjing to service its major client, the sources noted.

TSMC has disclosed that the phase-one facility of its Nanjing fab designed for 20,000 wafers monthly already kicked off production in April. The new 12-inch facility has entered directly 16nm FinFET chip production to service mainly the foundry's China-based customers.

In addition, China's state-backed semiconductor company Tsinghua Unigroup unveiled previously plans to construct a US$30 billion memory fab in Nanjing. The plant is targeting a monthly capacity of 100,000 wafers in phase one of the development which will be used to produce DRAM and 3D-NAND flash chips.
