If you prefer to charge your iPhone using a cable rather than wirelessly, then the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max$1,099.99 at Verizon Wireless may not be a wise purchase right now. Both smartphones are exhibiting a problem where by they refuse to charge when a charging cable is plugged into the Lightning connector.
The problem was highlighted on the Apple support forums when iPhone XS$999.99 at Verizon Wireless owner xMASTIFFSx posted details of their charging experience and asked for help. If the phone is locked and therefore sleeping, plugging in a Lightning cable can result in no response from the handset. What should happen is the display lights up and indicates the battery is being charged.
Further testing, as highlighted in the Unbox Therapy video above, reveals that both XS models of iPhone are affected. The problem seems to be intermittent, but in the worst cases an iPhone becomes unresponsive with the cable plugged in. Some handsets have also been reported to have confirmed they are charging, but ultimately did not recharge.
The support forum post by xMASTIFFSx is now 20 pages long, but so far there's been no response from Apple. Is it a software or hardware issue? Seeing as the problem is intermittent and the batteries are getting charged, I'd say it's much more likely to be software related. That's good news because it's easier to fix for Apple and hopefully shouldn't result in a Genius needing to get their hands-on with your phone. The worst case for Apple is if this is a hardware problem, which could result in a very expensive and embarrassing recall.
With growing coverage of this problem, Apple will now be fully aware that this is a problem and one that it needs to investigate and respond to. We'll be sure to let you know when that happens.
