Sony, the leader in the image sensing market ever since it pioneered CCD development, is hoping that 3D image sensors will revive the flagging smartphone industry which is estimated to have fallen about 3% this year
Sony’s sensor boss, Satoshi Yoshihara (pictured), says the company will ramp up 3D sensor production in later summer 2019 in response to demand from customers including Samsung and Apple.
Yoshihara doesn’t say by how much he will be increasing production.
The hope is, among phone and 3D sensor manufacturers, that functions like face and gesture recognition which 3D sensors enable, will revive the smartphone market which is thought to have contracted about 3% this year and is only expected to grow 3.6% in 2019.
Sony is already providing customers with SDKs so they can start to create 3D apps.
Like ST’s 3D sensors, Sony sensors use time of flight technology.
