Micron Technology to enter volume production of 1x nm DRAM

Friday, February 22, 2019

Micron Technology is on track to enter volume production of DRAM memory manufactured using 1ynm process technology later in 2019, according to KC Hsu, chairman for Micron Memory Taiwan.

Micron has entered volume production of 1xnm DRAM chips at both its factory sites in Taoyuan (northern Taiwan) and Taichung (central Taiwan), and is gearing up for commercial production of 1ynm-made chips in the second half of this year, Hsu indicated. Micron also plans to move a newer 1znm node to volume production in 2020, Hsu said.

Meanwhile, Micron's backend plant in Taichung has kicked off volume production, Hsu noted. The facility is fully automated to provide high-end backend services such as 3D IC integration for the production of DRAM chips, said Hsu, adding that Micron continues to maintain its existing ties with Taiwan-based OSAT providers.

Taiwan is already an important manufacturing site of Micron, according to Hsu. The US memory chip vendor has also established a center of excellence for leading-edge DRAM locally.

As a result of its expanding operations in Taiwan, Micron is looking to hire an additional 1,000 employees locally, said Hsu. The number of its workforce stationed in Taiwan is expected to reach 8,000 people by the end of 2019.
