Mobile SoC specialist MediaTek is gearing up to kick off volume production of its new 5G chip solutions starting the second quarter of 2019 through early next year, according to industry sources.
MediaTek is expected to unveil more chip solutions for 5G networks including those using mmWave frequencies later in 2019, as the mobile SoC specialist is gearing up to be among the dominant chip suppliers in the 5G era, said the sources. The upcoming solutions include a modem chip for mmWave networks, and SoCs that will work with both sub-6GHz and mmWave frequencies, with all targeting 2020 for commercial production.
Following the launch of its Helio M70 5G modem chip, MediaTek has announced its first single-chip 5G solution designed for sub-6GHz networks with sample deliveries scheduled for the third quarter of 2019. MediaTek disclosed that its new 5G SoC combines the company's 5G modem and most advanced AI processing unit, and Arm's recently-introduced Cortex-A77 CPU and Mali-G77 CPU cores, and will power commercial devices slated for launch in the first quarter of 2020.
