Apple is reported by The Information to be talking to Intel about buying the German part of its modem operation.
Intel acquired modem expertise when it bought Infineon’s mobile chip unit in 2011 for $1.4 billion.
Following the resolution of the Apple-Qualcomm spat in April, Intel said it was pulling out of modem development. It is now trying to sell the operation either as a whole or piecemeal.
Apple is building its own internal modem unit with the intention of having its own modem ready to use in 2025.
It is hiring wireless chip engineers in San Diego and has said it may employ 1,200 engineers there in the next three years.
