China's ZTE to ship 5G chips this year after Huawei

Monday, July 1, 2019

China telecom equipment maker ZTE will deepen its strategic patent deployment in 5G-related technologies and enhance the development of 5G chips, and is slated to release 7nm 5G chips in the second half of 2019 before advancing further to 5nm node, according to the firm's president Xu Ziyang.

At the 5G Summit held alongside MWC Shanghai 2019, Xu cited company statistics as saying that ZTE's patent applications had amounted to 73,000 cases as of the end of 2018, including over 35,000 globally-licensed patents and more than 3,000 strategic patents for 5G technologies.

Xu said that ZTE will spend over 10% of its annual revenues on R&D projects in 2019, focusing more on developing core operating systems for 5G mobile communications networks, edge computing technology, and 5G-based core chip solutions, with its chipmaking arm Sanechips to play a crucial role in boosting in-house chip supply capability.

With 5G commercialization to kick off in 2020, ZTE has landed 25 5G commercial contracts with clients worldwide and completed shipments of over 50,000 5G base stations, according to the company.

ZTE's 5G networks feature multiple modes, multiple frequencies and multiple architectures, able to handle more complicated applications with fewer base stations than needed for 4G. For instance, the firm's 5G Common Core released at the MWC Shanghai 2019 features a 2.6GHz spec that can accommodate both 4G and 5G to help telecom operators upgrade from NSA (non-standalone) to SA network operations at a 40% lower cost.

At the event, ZTE has also showcased many own-brand 5G terminal devices, including Axon 10 Pro 5G handset, 5G indoor and outdoor routers, 5G mobile hotspots, and 5G modems. The 5G handset is undergoing a national validation process and is set to hit the China market in July.

ZTE has also announced it has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with China Unicom on 5G Live TV at MWC Shanghai 2019.

As per the agreement, both parties will be committed to building a joint operation team, focusing on the development and application of 5G Live TV innovations and 5G network technologies, said ZTE.

5G Live TV solution boasts the core technologies of 5G and the edge computing of MEC vCDN. The large bandwidth of 5G network guarantees the shoot-and-transmit capability of multi-camera video sources while the edge computing of MEC vCDN provides the real-time processing and distribution of video content with technical support.

In addition, this solution explores innovations in services and business models, said ZTE. For instance, based on the smart recognition technology of MEC, player profile can be displayed in real time to meet personalized demands of spectators. Value-added services, such as VIP view, real-time social interaction, food ordering, and hotel booking, are leading an innovative business model for 5G applications.
