Several leaders from semiconductor firms and organizations have paid a visit to Taiwan's president Tsai Ing-wen, asking the government to tackle the two biggest issues facing the country's IC industry: a lack of talent and a lack of basic research.
The leaders include: SEMI president and CEO Ajit Manocha; TSMC chairman Mark Liu; UMC co-president SC Chien; Powerchip Semiconductor chairman Frank Huang; Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE) president and CEO Tien Wu; Vanguard International Semiconductor (VIS) Leuh Fang; MediaTek president CJ Hsien; Nanya Technology president Pei-ing Lee; and Etron Technology chairman and CEO Nicky Lu.
Tsai pointed out that the government has already launched the 5+2 Industry Transformation project that combines resources of the government, industries and academia to help nurture talent that industries need.
In related news, weak end-market demand for electronics products and semiconductor clients adjusting inventory caused Taiwan's IC production value to slip to only NT$343.1 billion (US$10.98 billion) in the second quarter, but the amount is expected to pick up in the third quarter, as the consumer electronics market has entered the traditional strong season, which is boosting orders for foundries, IC designers and IC distributors, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs.
