Vanguard International Semiconductor (VIS) will see its revenues rise sharply in 2020, thanks mainly to its acquisition of Globalfoundries' 8-inch fab in Singapore, according to Fang Lueh, chairman for the Taiwan-based specialty IC foundry.
The Singapore-based facility it acquired from Globalfoundries will be VIS' fourth 8-inch wafer plant, said Lueh, adding that the acquisition will bring in additional production capacities and generate more output and sales.
VIS had disappointing sales results in the first three quarters of 2019, due mainly to unfavorable global trade conditions and other macro factors affecting negatively consumer confidence, Lueh noted. Nevertheless, the company has managed to maintain stable profit performance thanks to its efforts to continue technology development, Lueh said.
VIS in early 2019 struck a deal to acquire Globalfoundries' Fab 3E in Singapore, which has a monthly capacity of about 35,000 8-inch wafers. The transaction, valued at US$236 million, will close at the end of this year.
VIS saw its cumulative 2019 revenues through September slip 1.3% from a year earlier to NT$20.95 billion (US$686.2 million).
VIS runs three 8-inch fabs in Taiwan, with combined production capacity reaching approximately 209,000 wafers monthly.
